Mental Health at Camp

04/18/2023 9:00 AM

Coral Reef 1

We are camp professionals, not mental health professionals. But anyone who serves kids (and staff!) these days knows first-hand that they all need more support around mental, emotional, and social health (MESH). Join us for a day of education around MESH at camp. We will start with a framework for understanding mental health that empowers us to support campers and staff while staying within our roles as camp pros, not mental health providers. We’ll explore strategies for preventing crises as best we can, and for 1 on 1 intervention with both campers and staff, when it’s required. You'll leave with practical, tactical tools for camp, and with increased confidence and hope for next summer.

Dave Brown

Dave Brown www.davebrownlcsw.com  is a licensed clinical social worker who serves as the director for Mountain Camp, a residential program near Lake Tahoe. At camp, he supports staff and camper mental health, well-being, and development. Outside of camp, he runs Fence Post Learning, an online Staff Training resource, and maintains a small telehealth therapy practice from his home in the Bay Area.  Dave’s sessions will provide participants with tools and resources to support mental health at camp.

A Training Smorgasbord: A Buffet of Ideas to Engage Your Staff in the Learning Process

You are cordially invited to a training smorgasbord guaranteed to satisfy a hearty appetite! This metaphorical buffet will offer a sample of "appetizers" (ways to get staff ready to learn), a 3-course "meal" (including brain-friendly techniques to present training topics and incorporate movement/visual aids to enhance learning), and a selection of "desserts" (ways to put a flavorful end to training sessions). Come hungry and leave with ideas (doggie bag included) that will engage your staff in the learning process (even if attention spans are short) while indulging them with training methods that will improve retention of critical information. It’s never too early to plan for staff training - the success of your summer depends on it.

Camp-School Partnership Demonstration Project Panel: Reflections and Resources

04/19/2023 8:30 AM

Paradise 1

This past summer, ACA partnered with the National Summer Learning Association to fund 10 camp-school partnerships across the country. Now is your opportunity to learn about this innovative project, and the guidance we have created around creating partnerships of your own! We will have a panel of project participants sharing real-life stories from the field about the impact these camp programs have on students and achievement. The audience will also hear ACA’s recent research findings around how schools and camps affect each other, as well as academic-adjacent outcomes, and the results of this past summer. Leave with practical knowledge and tips about best practices, ACA tools, how to build your own camp-school partnership, and suggestions for how the K-12 and summer recreation fields can support each other in building organizational capacity.

Every fall year-round staff members get to experience time travel. Because every fall either through parent evaluations or messages around re-enrollment we discover things that happened during the summer that we didn’t know happened! How could Brittany have eaten 30 crayons without you knowing? How did Jamar get home and tell his parents he was sad and cried every night without you knowing? In this session we’ll talk about what we do at Gold Arrow Camp to track everyday issues that might not require your attention now, but which will be useful when that time comes that a parent raises an issue you didn’t see!

True leadership is Giving Power Away: Preparing new leaders for the challenges of command

04/19/2023 1:45 PM

Paradise 2

Calling all Directors: Looking to update your pre-camp leadership training? Then this session is for you!

We know that camp is about growth, not just for campers but also for our staff. It seems like every summer we have new people filling our middle leadership roles and it can be hard to know what they need to succeed. Camp has a way of throwing all kinds of curveballs in our direction, and having a highly adaptive and unified team can make or break those high-pressure moments.

I have always believed that regardless of their day-to-day responsibilities, all leaders should be trained in the same basic concepts, beliefs, and practices. We should all speak the same “leadership language.” Your leadership language is the philosophies of leadership that you subscribe to, whatever they may be. Examples include encouraging self-rescue, intensity vs. consistency, radical candor, and extreme ownership. By setting unified expectations for how our leadership teams interact with campers, other staffs, upper leadership, and each other, we can help set a consistent and supportive tone for the summer.

In this session, we’ll talk about how to structure your leadership training in a way that resonates with our young leaders, as well as look at some of the key topics and concepts that helped me build winning teams during my time as a camp director.

John "Swan" Swanwick, Guided Discoveries

John Swanwick

Embracing the servant-leader mindset, John “Swan” Swanwick works for Guided Discoveries as its People Operations Director. Swan is an impassioned believer that quality leadership is the key to success, and he now helps Guided Discoveries prepare its up-and-coming leaders for the rigors of leading a team in the modern world.

Swan has always been a student of leadership, following the philosophies of Simon Sinek, Jocko Willink, and Dr. Brené Brown, to name a few. His experience with leadership comes from the world of summer camp, disaster response (serving as a volunteer leader with Team Rubicon), working on high-performing commercial diving teams, and a short stint in the Royal Navy.

Swan (loving a challenge) built the People Operations Director role after his Summer Camp in Virginia closed due to the financial impact of COVID-19 on the summer camp industry. He enjoys Obstacle Course Racing, deploying with Team Rubicon to help communities rebuild post-disaster, and spending time with his wife and daughter.

DUMPING THE DISSING: How to Train Staff to Stop Put-Downs & Other Disrespectful Behavior

04/19/2023 3:45 PM

Support staff in building a respectful camp community in an increasingly diverse world where just reading the tone of social media commentary makes this challenge very clear. This one-of-a-kind session demonstrates precisely what to say and do to confidently handle important negative behaviors, including name-calling, teasing, verbal bullying, and other disrespectful behavior. It provides Michael’s original training tools and activities to train staff—and have them practice immediately—how to be professionally “on” this issue. The big bonus of this session is that by learning these techniques, staff can also use them in dealing with all other undesired behaviors at camp—handling difficult behavior with greater credibility and calmness.

The Not-So-Secret Mission of Working with Youth

04/19/2023 3:45 PM

Compass Rose Ballroom

Often there is mystery around what working with youth (or being a camp counselor) really is or means. If we take a moment to reflect on what kids (ages 5 to 95) need from the adults in their lives, the secret mission is not so secret after all. The importance of staff's role in this mission will become Clear (with a capital C). Teach staff how to build connections and community by making intentional choices and fostering curiosity and creativity. When conflict is seen as a growth opportunity and there is commitment to the job, this summer’s staff will be well on their way to being a Champion (bigger capital C) in the lives of youth!
