Paradise 2
Calling all Directors: Looking to update your pre-camp leadership training? Then this session is for you!
We know that camp is about growth, not just for campers but also for our staff. It seems like every summer we have new people filling our middle leadership roles and it can be hard to know what they need to succeed. Camp has a way of throwing all kinds of curveballs in our direction, and having a highly adaptive and unified team can make or break those high-pressure moments.
I have always believed that regardless of their day-to-day responsibilities, all leaders should be trained in the same basic concepts, beliefs, and practices. We should all speak the same “leadership language.” Your leadership language is the philosophies of leadership that you subscribe to, whatever they may be. Examples include encouraging self-rescue, intensity vs. consistency, radical candor, and extreme ownership. By setting unified expectations for how our leadership teams interact with campers, other staffs, upper leadership, and each other, we can help set a consistent and supportive tone for the summer.
In this session, we’ll talk about how to structure your leadership training in a way that resonates with our young leaders, as well as look at some of the key topics and concepts that helped me build winning teams during my time as a camp director.
John "Swan" Swanwick, Guided Discoveries

Embracing the servant-leader mindset, John “Swan” Swanwick works for Guided Discoveries as its People Operations Director. Swan is an impassioned believer that quality leadership is the key to success, and he now helps Guided Discoveries prepare its up-and-coming leaders for the rigors of leading a team in the modern world.
Swan has always been a student of leadership, following the philosophies of Simon Sinek, Jocko Willink, and Dr. Brené Brown, to name a few. His experience with leadership comes from the world of summer camp, disaster response (serving as a volunteer leader with Team Rubicon), working on high-performing commercial diving teams, and a short stint in the Royal Navy.
Swan (loving a challenge) built the People Operations Director role after his Summer Camp in Virginia closed due to the financial impact of COVID-19 on the summer camp industry. He enjoys Obstacle Course Racing, deploying with Team Rubicon to help communities rebuild post-disaster, and spending time with his wife and daughter.
