Welcome and Opening Keynote

10/24/2023 3:15 PM

Opening Keynote: Where does the Soup go? Lessons Learned From an Anxious Kid at Camp

I was given a gift when my son attended camp for the first time, that gift came in the form of tears, fear, and overwhelming anxiety. It was a heart-wrenching experience to see my favorite place in the world be so hard for him to experience. What about camp was making it so hard? How can I fix this? His answers fundamentally changed the way that my team and I now approach the camp. Join us as we work through his anxiety and learn the answer to the question Where does the soup go?

Can You Help Me, Help Me?

Can You Help Me, Help Me?

Helping oneself begins with knowing oneself – and that can be a challenge. Life is so fast-paced that we’re lucky if we “have” the time to sit and just be. At least, this is what
we often tell ourselves. However, making and taking the time to get to know ourselves can lead to greater growth and happier living. It all begins with self-awareness. This
internal mindfulness is an intentional process that requires recognition, reflection, and a response – and practice. These phases of self-awareness comprise self-care, which requires intentionality and even practice. Ideas and activities to help others help themselves will be integral to this session.

Session led by Deb Jordan-Deb is a professional educator who has been teaching and conducting training workshops for a variety of organizations for over 35 years. She has made over 150 presentations at the local, state, national, and international levels as well as written textbooks. Deb's focus is on all things human - relationships, behaviors, thoughts, and
attitudes. She has presented on topics related to leadership and followership; group dynamics; diversity, equity, and inclusion; staffing; program evaluation; and ethics. Deb

Reducing the Risk of Child Sexual Harassment at Camp

Have a nagging concern of child sexual abuse happening at your camp? Based on child sexual abuse statistics, that would be reasonable. Join Cherie Benjoseph, LCSW,
child sexual abuse prevention expert, for a lively discussion on easily implemented steps to strengthen your camp against the threat of all types of sexual abuse, including
camper on camper. Topics covered will include tips on screening of staff during the interview process; creation of a Camper Advocate Team; how to coach counselors on creating a culture of safety in their cabin – using scripts; building resiliency and professionalism without creating increased fear and anxiety.

Session led by Cherie Benjoseph-Cherie Benjoseph, LCSW is a subject matter expert in the field of Child Sexual Abuse Prevention. She has practiced social work since 1989. After receiving her MSW at Boston University, she worked as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in multiple school and non-profit settings in the Northeast and the state of Florida. In 2009 she founded KidSafe Foundation, a non-profit focused on child sexual abuse primary prevention. Cherie grounds her work in Child Sexual Abuse Prevention using a public health model. She is convinced that educating children and those who live or work with children about child sexual abuse and trauma prevention will strengthen families and protect kids, breaking the cycle of abuse. Presently, as Director of National Outreach and Education for the Center for Child Counseling, Cherie works with national and local leaders to define and improve the ever-changing issues around protecting children from harm. For more than a decade, she has presented nationally at conferences and symposiums. She loves to have conversations about how to talk with kids about personal safety, and she believes a safe society—free from child sexual abuse and exploitation—is attainable. Through Cherie’s leadership, several state-of- the-art programs have been created including Stay KidSafe!™, a personal safety curriculum for children, and CampSafe®, an online training program for camp staff. Cherie serves on the National Coalition to Prevent Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation. She is a mom of two (grown and flown). She enjoys qigong, working with clay, travel, and time with her family when she’s not out advocating for the safety of all children.

Summer camp food service is one of the most important aspects for every sleep away camp. During this session, we will review some tips on how to hire and retain chefs
and cooks year after year. We will also review menu creation and planning on how to incorporate special diets while finding the best food purveyors to keep your budget
under control. This presentation will also weigh the pros and cons to hiring a professional food service vendor and whether or not hiring a company is right for your camp.

Session led by:Marla Gebaide has been with Tastebuds Food Service since 2018. Her primary focus is to ensure that camps get quality service that includes from scratch cooking, fresh ingredients, and also brings in an inclusive special diets menu. With a team of culinary professionals that have decades of experience, she works to keep kids fueled with great food, and helps relieve directors from having to jump into the kitchen.

Join this panel discussion to gain insight from former year round camp professionals who had various seasonal roles at camp this past summer. Share their joys and challenges through their stories and mistakes. Join in the collective brainstorming about how to recruit and support non-traditional staff (former staff, alumni, local retirees, etc.) to provide productive contributions to your camp. We don’t have all the answers, but had meaningful summers and think there are others out there ready to contribute in the camp setting.

This is a highly-engaging session about the contracts that govern our relationships with parents, vendors, retreat groups, and staff. What key provisions should these
agreements contain? What are the main considerations when evaluating the strength of our contracts? What are the downsides of reusing contracts that we "borrow" from other camps? Drawing on the speaker’s extensive experience drafting a wide range of contracts for camps, this session will explore best practices for the many agreements camps use to define their commercial relationships.

Things I learned at Day Camp that I wish I knew When I Ran Sleep Away Camps

“It’s Just a Day Camp.” There seems to be hierarchy in Camping, with large sleep away camps on top, and small day camps in urban centers at the bottom. I played a
role in reinforcing this idea. I thought to work at a sleep away camp was better. But now having run both I realize I was wrong. With more competition, more parent interactions, less space and often smaller budgets Day Camps seem to deal with so much of camping’s down side, with little of the upside, and yet as we have emerged from Covid they have learned and adapted much faster, and seem to have bounced back quicker that sleep away camps. Learn what the last 5 years has taught me about hiring, and retaining staff. Camper and staff mental health, Parent interactions and communication and how this can help all camps grow.

Session led by Dave Boyle- With over 25 years of Camping experience Dave Boyle is a transformational leader with a proven record of revitalizing struggling programs through strategic vision and structural change. His unique approach harnesses data to analysis the experience of Campers, Parents and Staff, and optimize each in order to build a complete Camp experience that increases staff and camper retention, builds brand loyalty while reducing costs.

I'm So Lost. Who Has the Compass?

We hire staff because we saw something in them – a spark, a passion, a desire to learn – all elements of what helps someone to grow in personal leadership. Yet, the staff we hire may not see those same traits in themselves – at least not yet. This can result in feelings of being lost when they first come to camp. And what do we do when we feel lost? We look for the person with the compass – typically senior staff. In their roles, senior staff have fantastic opportunities to observe, model, speak with, and serve as a guide for newer staff members. Being intentional in how we guide staff into emerging leaders can add tremendous value to everyone involved in the camp experience. Come learn how you can be the compass to support staff in becoming stronger leaders!

In Your Post-Virus Workplace: Crisis Communications: Always Acknowledged, Never Planned or Trained

COVID 19 taught us that all the crisis plans your workplace is supposed to have require crisis communications with internal and external audiences. Yet most employers have not planned, trained, drilled or exercised these important procedures and systems—and the people who run them—ever or on a regular basis for emergency, disaster recovery, business continuity, pandemic or crisis media plans. As COVID 19 and Sandy Hook proved, your management can do this right and protect the brand; or do this wrong and all get fired. Crisis communications cut across all your plans. This presentation employs case histories that will focus on the tactical and strategic communications that are required by law; mandated by standards and best practices; as well those that can save your job when an emergency strikes.
