Coaching as a Leadership Tool: Inspiring Growth at Day Camp

12/03/2025 12:50 PM
The corporate world invests over $5 billion annually in coaching employees. The summer camp industry has barely begun to tap the potential of this potent tool. This session will introduce the distinctions that differentiate using coaching with your staff from the more common and traditional approach of managing, counseling, and problem-solving. It will introduce the GROW Model and demonstrate how applying this methodology with staff builds their skills, confidence, and independence. The most effective intervention with an employee is the one that equips them so the problem they came to you about never happens again. Coaching them using this model will make a substantial difference.

A Trauma Informed Approach to Behavior Management

12/03/2025 2:50 PM
A trauma-informed approach to behavior management helps staff understand how both camper and staff experiences shape behavior. By teaching staff to recognize how their own reactions, stress, and past experiences can influence or escalate situations, this model fosters greater empathy and composure. The result is a measurable reduction in behavior incidents, parent calls, and staff burnout. Grounded in emotional intelligence and predictable routines, Dave’s method builds safer, calmer, and more connected camp environments.

Choice-Based Programming at Day Camp: Balancing Freedom and Structure

12/04/2025 1:20 PM
How do you give campers real freedom to design their own day, building critical life-long skills, while still keeping camp safe, equitable, and manageable? At The School in Rose Valley’s summer camp, choice is central to the program: campers create their own schedules with options like archery, woodshop, drama, survival skills, and more. Participants will leave with practical tools and strategies to bring more camper choice to their own programs.

Now serving as Assistant Director of Summer Camp, Samantha continues to champion a progressive, whole-child, and tech-free approach to learning and play.
