Land Acknowledgement

10/24/2022 12:00 AM
Online conferences and virtual events provide a unique opportunity for land acknowledgements. Because this conference happens in many locations simultaneously it gives all participants an opportunity to reflect on the location they are joining from. As Dr. Robert Warner shares in his email communications, "I acknowledge that I live, work, and recreate on the traditional and ancestral homeland of the Shoshone, Paiute, Goshute, and Ute Tribes." Kim Brosnan, ACA's Director of Knowledge Systems, invites our participants to begin the Staffing Summit with this consideration "As we gather in this virtual space, we recognize that we are connected with one another through the winds that blow air into our lungs and through the waters that move deep into the earth and up into the sky. We acknowledge that the ground beneath our feet is historically the home of Indigenous Peoples, many of whom have been forced to leave for other lands."

Generations at Camp: Solving the Generational Tug-of-War in Your Workforce

The times they are a changin'. Here and now, many camps have found themselves at a crossroads.  Staff turnover and retirement waves make it difficult to manage teams and maintain stability.  And how do you keep the peace when the expectations of young staff threaten to dismantle the traditions cherished by older staff?  More than ever, generational differences are challenging camps, but finding and keeping talent doesn't have to feel like an endless game of tug of war.

Findings from the ACA Staffing Practices Pulse Survey

10/24/2022 1:10 PM
In this presentation, we share results from our recent survey of camp professionals about the staffing practices they used this past summer. On the survey, we asked camp professionals to identify practices they used within each of the following categories: recruitment; hiring; employment experience; bonuses, pay, and benefits; retention and culture. We intend for this presentation to involve both a sharing of our results and a brainstorming about most used and least used practices.

Lessons from the World Beyond Camp

10/24/2022 1:10 PM
Did you struggle with staffing issues this summer? So did schools, restaurants, hospitals, trucking companies... Like it or not, camps play in the same job market as every other organization and industry. What can we learn from OUTSIDE the camp world to get ahead of employment trends for 2023? Who's struggling (like many of us), and what does that tell us about ourselves? Who's thriving, and what are they doing right?

Staff Program Progression - A Template for Retaining Your Best Staff

10/24/2022 1:10 PM
One of the keys to a successful summer is maximizing the number of staff that return each year. Many camps focus on camper retention, but do we do the same for staff? Are we offering a new and exciting experience for our staff each summer? This session will focus on the concept of Program Progression for staff. We'll use the example of the newly formed "Leadership Council" at Camp Ramaquois as a template for how to create experiences that staff will make veteran staff want to return to camp!

Supporting Staff Mental Health - Without Becoming a Therapist

10/24/2022 1:10 PM
Supporting the mental health and well-being of staff is critical to a successful program. Staff mental health needs are higher than ever, while coping skills and resilience seem to be at all-time lows. Leadership staff need to be able to support staff, but should not attempt to be therapists. Where is the middle ground? We will start with a framework for approaching mental health at camp within our skill set, and end with specific techniques for supporting staff who are struggling in the moment.

Stop Selling, Start Interviewing

10/24/2022 2:20 PM
The search for staff continues to be the most challenging part of our industry; and while jokes about the “warm body” strategy abound these days, the staff we're finding are arriving less prepared than ever before. In recent years, conversations with prospective staff members have turned into a “sales pitch,” rather than an interview (stop me if this sounds like you). This session will break down the interview process, and propose ways that camps can still prioritize quality alongside quantity.

When their well-intentioned advocacy crosses the line, resulting in ultimatums or outright aggressive interactions, we end up needing to carefully address unacceptable workplace behavior while ensuring staff needs and feelings are heard.
