Fire, Rehire, or Performance Manage

10/23/2024 2:15 PM
What do you do when you’re unsure about a staff member on your team? When should you fire, rehire, performance manage, or promote a person? Is the person right for the role? As camp people we face these questions all the time. During a particularly tough re-hiring decision our team discovered a great tool that asks you 7 people questions to decide what you do should do with an employee you’re worried about. I’ll share insights, stories, and clarification as we walk through each of the 7 questions and apply them to your own scenarios to ensure you are confident about what to do when an employee just doesn’t feel right.

Keeping your Waterfronts Safe and Fun

10/23/2024 2:15 PM
As a former Camp Director I know one of our greatest nightmares is a drowning at our waterfront. You’re not alone. The World Health Organization has declared accidental drowning a world-wide health crisis, which is why they asked each country to develop their own “water safety plans”. In response, a collection of water safety professionals gathered together to create the comprehensive “National Water Safety Action Plan”. In this session, we will explore how the current ACA standards line up with the NWSAP, and other potential areas of improvements you can make to your camps to make our Northland camps the safety possible.

Location: Sunrise Inn Meeting Room

Michael McArthur is a former director of Christian-Bible/YMCA/United Methodist/Boy and Girls Club camps, while currently the General Manger of a golf resort, Mike's passion still remains in the camping field. His experience leading/managing camp waterfronts, YMCA aquatic programs, and 20+ years as a Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor led him to be a part of the National Water Safety Action Plan Advisory Team, the USA version of teams implemented by the World Health Organization to reduce drownings worldwide. Water safety has been a passion of Mike's since he started as a Lifeguard/Swim Instructor at the local YMCA as a 16 year old, and has been become a lifelong mission of helping camps/groups "Keep it Safe, Make it Fun, Active Every Day" on our lakes and rivers.

Campfires and Conservation: Camp and Land Trust partnerships for engagement and sustainable futures

10/23/2024 2:16 PM
Camps make natural partners for Land Trusts. Not only are camps often one of the first immersive nature-based experiences for youth, but they also often have a significant land base with high conservation values. Camps offer opportunities for partnerships and collaboration as it related to engagement and inclusion. Protecting this land base allows camps to 1) maintain their land base, 2) leave a permanent legacy while also 3) enabling them to potentially unlock equity tied up in the real estate in support of programming and long-term financial health. The accredited Minnesota Land Trust (MLT) has extensive experience working with camps. MLT has completed 36 conservation easements with camps and nature centers resulting in the permanent protection of more than 5,000 acres of land. In this session, we will highlight examples of successful partnerships with camps that have resulted both in high-quality conservation easements and have also served as a catalyst for engagement and inclusion, expanding opportunities for more nature-based experiences and growing the Land Trust’s member base in the process. We will cover, why are camps and land trusts/easements a natural fit; What is different when preparing a camp easement, and what sets a camp easement up for success.

She is currently one of the Camp Directors at the International Music Camp, which is a fine arts summer camp on the border of Canada and the United States at the beautiful International Peace Garden. As a trained music educator, Christine also plays viola in the Minot Symphony Orchestra, runs on Diet Coke, and enjoys life with her husband Tim and rescue pup Sunshine.

Paddy Cullen is the Camp Director at Camp Fire Minnesota. Paddy has been working in camps and youth development for nearly 15 years. On a whim one year, he decided to try out being a camp counselor. Paddy has worked to create positive camp experiences in safe environments for thousands of campers and hundreds of staff over two different camp programs.
