Opening Keynote

01/20/2026 3:30 PM
In a world where change is constant and challenges can feel overwhelming, one truth remains steady: community matters. In this inspiring keynote, Sterling, co-founder of Innovative Camp Company, will explore the profound value of belonging, coming together, and supporting one another. Through the playful yet meaningful lens of children's literature, we'll look at why sticking together isn't just comforting - it's strategic and essential. Thriving communities don't happen by accident, and this session will highlight the collective strength that emerges when we lean on each other. To reinforce that message, a special guest will also join the stage - someone who embodies the timeless power of love and shared purpose! Their presence will serve as a powerful reminder of what binds us and why these forces matter now more than ever. Leave this session inspired, grounded, and committed as we reaffirm why the camp community is worth protecting, investing in, and celebrating - especially when things are hard.

Location: Main Auditorium

Sterling Nell Leija's work in youth development and camp is grounded in her Texas roots. Her passion for camp began as a camper at Slumber Falls Camp. She later built her early career at Camp CAMP and Camp for All, and she further strengthened her connection to the regional camping community while serving on the Texoma Local Council of Leaders (LCOL).

Leveraging a foundation in educational psychology from Texas A&M University, Sterling brings both expertise and heart to advancing education in the out-of-school space. While at Texas A&M, she founded Camp LIFE, a unique youth development project of the university.

As an educator, consultant, speaker, and writer, Sterling focuses on creating intentional outcome-based programming that ensures access to high-quality youth development opportunities. Her work emphasizes meaningful program impact and using summer programs as a platform for learning.

Her leadership spans nonprofit operations, program quality, and strategic impact. She has served as a camp founder, nonprofit executive, and national volunteer for the American Camp Association, leveraging her experience to foster impactful growth and sustainable success in programs and organizations. Sterling is the co-founder of the Innovative Camp Company, where she helps camp and youth development organizations achieve transformative growth by aligning mission, innovation, and community for sustainable success.

Kendra Perkins, M.A. Ed, is the Co-Founder of Innovative Camp Company where she helps camp and youth organizations streamline operations and enhance mission delivery. Kendra brings a wealth of expertise in program management and content development. Her focus explores the complexities of overseeing overnight programs, encompassing supervision best practices, mental health and wellness supports, risk management, innovative program and activity development, and food services (including managing special dietary needs).

Kendra's work is distinguished by her dedication to making impact accessible and immediate for the camp professionals she supports. She is passionate about creating practical, affordable, and easy-to-implement resources and tools that leaders can use immediately to enhance program quality and staff development.

Kendra has dedicated her career to working with youth and adults with disabilities and illnesses. With a master's degree in special education, her culminating thesis focused on youth resiliency. Kendra is also a certified therapy dog handler, sharing the therapeutic benefits of therapy animals with camps.

Harbor - Certified Therapy Dog. Harbor, a mini-Australian Labradoodle, is the proud member of a certified therapy dog team with her handler, Kendra Perkins. Born on March 26, 2021, she loves people and other animals. She has a particular fondness for stuffed moose toys and has never eaten any human food! Equine Activities Made Accessible Through the Utilization of PATH Intl. Safety Standards & Technique

01/20/2026 4:45 PM
When accessibility isn’t an afterthought or backup plan, all campers, regardless of the challenges they face, can experience horses at camp and build memories for life. Hear from Emilie Thomason, the Ranch Manager at Morgan’s Camp, about how she utilizes PATH International Premier Center safety standards as well as experiences accrued as a Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor to foster accessible horse experiences at camp. Bring home equine assisted services techniques, procedures, and equipment inspiration that your own program can use to help make their horse activities safely accessible for campers in need of mobility assistance and more.

Locations: Trull Classroom #3

Emilie Thomason has been a part of the equine assisted industry for over 20 years, behind the scenes caring for horses and facilities, in the arena as a Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor, and in the office as management. Before joining Morgan’s Camp as the Ranch Manager, I was the Assistant Program Director of the PATH International Premier Accredited Center All Star Equestrian in the DFW area. There we served over a hundred individuals with a variety of medical conditions, about a third needing mobility aids. I am excited to share how I have utilized my experience and industry connections to help Morgan’s Camp offer accessible horse activities to our campers.

Supporting our Counselors

01/20/2026 4:45 PM
"Supporting our counselors" is something that we all desire to do as camp professionals, but the what, when, where, why, and how we do that is a little bit harder to define. Join us for this session, where Noah Lawrence the Director of Nature Education at the Cibolo Center for Conservation discusses how training, evaluation, fostering community, and the decision to prioritize leadership development are all key components to supporting our counselors and fostering a camp experience that is excellent across the board.

Location: Trull Classroom #1

My whole life, my two loves have always been helping people and protecting the environment, which is why Noah Lawrence is delighted to be the Director of Nature Education at the Cibolo Center for Conservation. While attending Texas State University to get my teaching certification, I worked at the Cibolo part time as a Ranger, Summer Camp Counselor, and Nature Educator. Although I loved my time as a classroom teacher after college, the opportunity to join the Cibolo full time as member of the education team was an offer too tempting to pass up. As the Nature Education Director, I have helped to oversee the Accreditation and running of our Summer Day Camp Program, as well as a number of other programs including: fieldtrips, homeschool, trailblazers, ambassadors, family and adult night hikes, adult education workshops, and programs with community partners.

Behind the Campfire: Stories of Growth and Leadership

01/20/2026 4:46 PM
Pull up a chair and join three friends around the “conference campfire” for an hour of stories, laughs, and lessons learned from the trail to leadership. Jessicah Holloway, Tim Huchton, and Kurt Podeszwa aren’t just seasoned camp pros – they're storytellers with tales of unexpected detours, big wins, and the occasional campfire mishap that shaped their careers. This isn’t your typical panel; it’s a chance to hear real experiences, ask burning questions, and spark ideas for your own journey. Whether you’re dreaming of your first leadership role or just love a good camp story, this session promises inspiration with a side of fun!

Location: Trull Classroom #4

Kurt Podeswa, Tim Huchton, and Jessica Holloway have known each other for hundreds of (dog) years. They all have titles but believe that titles mean very little until you know the person. If you do not know them, they would all value time to chat with you at a meal or over a cup of coffee during this conference or after. Come up and ask them, they would love it, and you will get to know them much better than by reading a biography.

Asking for help sounds simple, but for many staff, it’s one of the hardest things they need to do. In this session, we’ll take a closer look at the hidden barriers that keep staff silent—fear, overwhelm, burnout, miscommunication—and how they play out in daily camp life. You’ll walk away with a clearer understanding of what’s underneath the hesitation and how to better support staff who struggle to ask.

High-Impact, Low-Budget Storytelling That Builds Belonging Before Camp Begins

01/21/2026 10:30 AM
Parents don’t fall in love with camp because of a flyer—they fall in love with the stories, voices, and emotions behind it. In a crowded marketplace, camps must create genuine connection long before a family shows up on opening day. Fortunately, you don’t need a big budget or a full-time marketing team to do it.  This interactive session blends practical marketing tactics with the heart of camp: authentic storytelling. Participants will learn how to capture and elevate real camper stories, staff voices, and parent perspectives—then repurpose that content across email, social media, video, and print using simple, low-cost tools.
