Opening Keynote - Jump Start Your Staff Training on Mental Health

10/06/2022 10:45 AM
As camping professionals, much of our time and training is spent on risk management. We prepare and plan for injuries, storms, fires, and active threats, but is your camp staff ready to help with a mental healthy crisis? This is a vast problem that many camps are not prepared. One in every five American youth are diagnosed with a mental illness. This is a problem too big for youth camping professionals to ignore. For our camps to be the safest and most inclusive environments possible, preparing staff to handle mental health emergencies is critical. This interactive presentation will help jump start your staff training on mental health. You will learn about the state of youth mental health in America, planning for reducing stress at camp, and handling mental health emergencies that may arise in the camp setting. Free resources for staff training will be available so you can take what you learn and get started applying it immediately at your facility.

How Kids Can Investigate Aquatic Ecosystems at Camp

10/06/2022 12:45 PM
If you have access to a lake (or even a pond or wetland), you can enrich your camp program by including water science. This workshop will introduce a variety of ways to engage youth in investigating aquatic ecosystems, building on their curiosity about the world around them. Inexpensive methods and how to build your own equipment will be included. Weather permitting, we will be outside trying out some of the activities. Discussion includes how to adapt these ideas in your camp setting and resources available to help you.

Trauma 101 - Becoming Trauma Informed

10/06/2022 12:45 PM
Becoming “trauma-informed” means recognizing that people often have many different types of traumas in their lives. People who have been traumatized need support and understanding from those around them. Often, trauma survivors can be re-traumatized by well-meaning caregivers and community service providers. In this session, you will gain an understanding of different types of traumas and how to apply a “trauma informed lens” to make your camp a more inclusive and safe space for trauma survivors.
