Value Staff and They Will Value Their Commitment

10/28/2024 1:10 PM
In today’s staffing world, it feels like our focus is just getting them “in the door”. We put so much innovation into recruiting and retaining and make our staff feel like the most important people in the world. Then, the summer gets rolling and subconsciously, we think of staffing as “done” for the year - and the staff notice. Call it generational, call it COVID-related, but it’s clear that retaining our staff is not a year-to-year initiative, it’s week-to-week. Join Matt as he walks through some of his best practices for helping staff realize their value as a difference-maker at camp and choose to see their contract through. You’ll walk away with 10 practical and proven strategies that you and your leadership team will be able to use this summer.

Getting Your Staff Through the Summer: Creating Opportunities for Ongoing Growth

10/28/2024 2:20 PM
Staff orientation, while important, is fast-paced and overwhelming. Retaining and using all of that information after hearing it once before camp is not practical. Staff start to wilt as early as week two. They need ongoing opportunities for professional and personal development that empowers them to keep going and keep positive. We will talk about creating time for these opportunities during camp (yes, I said "creating time during camp"). Happy staff = happy campers (and directors!).

Camp leaders are the backbone of camp, and when someone decides to move, it can leave a significant gap on the team. Finding a replacement for that "jack-of-all-trades" leader is never easy, and filling an important leadership position can take time, effort, and resources. In this session we'll provide you with the playbook for how to create a strategic hiring plan for your next executive search. We will provide insights into how to identify your target profile, write a job description, market your role to active candidates, and use LinkedIn to engage "passive" candidates. In addition, we will share candidate trends and market data around compensation and timing to best position you to compete for top talent. Having a solid plan is the first step to landing your next dream candidate.

Staff Culture Matters!

Despite a national (and local) lifeguard shortage, and paying lower wages than municipalities and others, we were able to fully staff the aquatics operations at each of our three locations. As a day camp we have to hire locally. As a facility manager, we don’t have campers of our own to pull from and yet, in summer 2024, we hired 240 lifeguards (180 doubled as swim instructors) with a retention rate of 65%.

The New Geographic Demographic for Day Camps: Hiring Outside Your Area Code

10/29/2024 1:10 PM
If you hire day camp staff, you may be summing up today’s to-do list in one short phrase: "Find More People!" Overcoming the challenges of local hiring so that staffing ratios are met is a big hill to climb. Creative expansion of the hiring pool is needed. So, have you considered hiring outside your area code? What if your potential hires didn’t need to have the initial “qualification” of living within driving distance of the camp? While the concept of expanded geographical hiring is neither simple nor straightforward, it is also not something to avoid considering just because of the potential challenges. Join Emily for a mind-expanding look at the considerations, potential benefits, and complexities of hiring residential staff at day camp!

Managing Capacity

10/29/2024 2:20 PM
Professional requirements continue to change, and expectations increase. Your day is full of competing priorities, and it seems there is no end of the pressure in sight. Your team members are giving their all, but not experiencing much progress. They feel exhausted like hamsters on an ever-changing wheel. To harness team energy and see real results, you must manage team capacity. In this session, Dr. PBJ will facilitate an interactive experience where leaders will practice a new model for managing personal and team capacity. Participants will learn and demonstrate a locus of control model that will identify the priority of all the priorities and focus work effort toward documented progress. Leaders will learn where to focus their energy when it seems everything is important and urgent.

Welcoming International Staff to Residential Summer Camp

10/29/2024 2:20 PM
As I spent months planning for this summer, I realized that International Staff would be making up over half of our Cabin Leader (counselor) staff. Our experience staffing 2023 was a huge struggle, and this level of International Staff would almost completely solve this issue. But I also knew from previous International Staff that residential camp can feel like an entirely unwelcoming experience. So I set out to make Summer 2024 an incredible summer for every single one of our staff members. I'd like to share what Camp Seymour tried, what worked, and how Summer 2025 will be even better.

When international staff work at your summer camp, it's important to consider cultural differences such as context, social hierarchies, concepts of personal space, individualism versus collectivism norms in cultures where your staff originate, and more. In this session, we will explore culture, their dimensions and how they related and impact your international staff. This article written for Project Real Job provides an insight to what will be covered in this session: https://www.acacamps.org/blog/new-kind-camp-culture
