Becoming a Sustainable Camp

01/12/2021 2:45 PM
“Going green” and “being sustainable” can be vague and intimidating terms. We all know we need to do more to live sustainably, but how? One of the best places is through your camp. Join us to learn how the nonprofit organization Green Camps and newly launched ACA National sustainability listserv can help you define or refine your goals and efforts for becoming a fully sustainable camp. We will share strategies and resources, plus field questions and comments. The session is for all camps, regardless of where you are in your journey towards sustainability. By joining together as a camp community, we can reduce environmental impact on thousands of acres and develop the next generation of eco-leaders.

Bringing the Outdoors to your Screen

01/13/2021 9:30 AM
In response to the COVID-19 Pandemic, Camp CAMP like many camps offered some forms of virtual programming for its campers. During our Virtual Summer Camp, we were able to facilitate a successful and well-loved reptile activity allowing for campers to learn about reptiles and get to meet some of the reptiles that live at Camp CAMP. Through this presentation, I will demonstrate how nature education activities can be translated through zoom through a hands-on example. Many of the considerations on what makes a virtual nature education activity successful for individuals of varying ability levels will be discussed as well as present other examples of virtual nature education that can be done.

Alex Grimm

Alex Grimm, Camp CAMP

Alex Grimm discovered his passion for working with individuals with special needs in the outdoors through attending an Alternative Spring Break. After the year, he returned to school to pursue a Master’s in Child Studies and Human Development focusing on the benefits of outdoor programs for individuals with special needs. While working on his degree, he continued to develop his skills by working as an Outdoor Education Instructor at Camp Nuhop. After graduating with his Master’s Degree from Tufts University, Alex started full-time employment at Children’s Association for Maximum Potential (CAMP) as a Program Specialist, where he continues to share his love of the outdoors with individuals with special needs. In response to the Covid-19 Pandemic, Alex was a key part of developing and implementing various online programs including science experiments, nature crafts, and hands-on animal interactions via Zoom and social media.

Serving as a Camp Professional can be an all-consuming profession, if not most of the year, then for sure during the summer months. No matter your age, or the role you play at camp, begin your plan for when you no longer “get” to work at camp. While this discussion will primarily deal with what to do with yourself when you no longer have a schedule to follow, there will be some discussion on what you can do now to help cover finances for retirement. Yes, young professionals need to plan for retirement NOW!

Advertising for Summer 2021

01/13/2021 10:45 AM
Welcome to the new trendless era of advertising — impossible to forecast sentiment, plan for cultural shifts, or tap into consumer insights. When the house is always on fire, it’s hard to get anyone’s attention. So, let’s walk the line between outright promoting your program like it’s 2019 and being sensitive to the culture of COVID. Let’s forget the hype, lean into market position, connect with consumers digitally, and focus on share of voice.

Next Level Evening Programs

01/14/2021 9:30 AM
We’ll begin by examining “traditions” in evening programs by figuring out what is a true “tradition” or what is something that has just always been done. Then we’ll talk about the mission and vision of camps to determine whether these programs align with both. We’ll take time to be creative with current programs and brainstorm new ones. Also, we’ll figure out logistics so if there are last minute moments[as we know occur every day at camps], programming can continue with delegating tasks to another person. Let’s work smarter for ourselves, campers and staff!
