Welcome and Opening Keynote

picture of keynote speaker Dave Boyle

Our opening keynote speaker is Dave Boyle.

Like so many before him Dave’s first summer at camp put his whole career on a new trajectory. After a brief tenure as a Policy Officer for the Scottish Minister of Education, Dave decided that he wanted to work in a role that had a more direct impact on those he was serving.  Eventually moving to the US to pursue work with a direct impact on youth. Working at several camps and youth focused organizations before moving to Florida. He currently serves as the Executive Director of Camp Cristina, a regional day camp. Dave’s none traditional career path to summer camp director has given him unique insights into program culture and staff development, the importance of a trauma informed approach to childcare and youth development and has become a strong advocate for a better understanding of our camper and staffs mental health needs.

Opening Keynote: Rethinking staff recruitment, engagement and retention: A mental health centered approach.

As we emerge from the pandemic one of Camping’s most common and reoccurring concerns has been the “availability” and “quality” of summer staff, with camps having to reduce enrollment, as they are unable to fill their payrolls. In his Keynote Dave will argue that this may not be a staffing issue but a more universal problem with the way camp staff (both year round and seasonal)  identify with their roles at camp and how this conflicts with the way that they have learned to navigate the world. Dave will identify a new way to talk about our camp programs that transforms how staff view their relationship with campers and each other.

"When our staff stop seeing themselves as ‘babysitters’ and start identifying with the deep and lasting impact they are having on youth mental health you will see a profound shift in who applies for work, who stays through the summer, and who comes back year after year."

10 Activities to Evaluate and Measure Camp Sustainability Opportunities

When it comes to “greening” your camp facility and programs it’s not always easy to know where to start. This session will provide 10 innovative approaches to evaluating and measuring opportunities to help access the environmental, educational and economic benefits of going green. From collecting and evaluating data about energy consumption to conducting a waste audit, we want to empower you to make informed decisions about what “green actions” will most benefit your camp. These activities are also perfect for engaging your campers and staff on sustainability topics and you’ll receive write ups for each activity so that you can implement them back at your camp.

Session led by Danny Sudman: Growing up, Danny spent 16 summers at YMCA Camp Hanes in North Carolina – first as a camper and later as a camp counselor. After receiving his BA in Sociology from North Carolina State University, he went on to join the leadership team at Catalina Island Camps where he managed the challenge course program and served as an environmental educator. While on the island, he completed the Catalina Environmental Leadership Program, an initiative of Jean Michel Cousteau’s Ocean Futures Society. Danny Sudman founded Green Camps in 2014, believing 100% in the extraordinary ability of the camp community to inspire and develop the next generation of environmental leaders.

Staffing. Safety. Society.

We talk about “safety”, but what does it actually mean in an ever-evolving legal climate? Staffing is a challenge, societal expectations have changed – all of which have a direct impact on the day-to-day operations of camp. How do we simplify risk and safety with so many moving parts? In this session, we’ll talk about incidents and claims from the past few summers and use data to point us towards practical steps you can take at camp to create safer environments for your campers, staff, and parents.

Session led by Meredith Stewart. Meredith is a Consultant with The Redwoods Group where she provides insight, tools, and a collaborative approach to keeping children and families safe. Prior to Redwoods, Meredith worked in Safety and Risk Management for the YMCA, with a specialization in camping and the safety of children. Her 22 years of front line experience in camping and youth-serving organizations have shaped her career into a platform for child advocacy. Sharing her experiences in youth programming, education beyond the classroom, overnight and day camping, aquatics, childhood trauma, abuse prevention, and risk management helps focus and progress her goal to build safer communities for all.

What You Are Doing Wrong at Staff Training AND How to Fix It

Ruby also discusses a variety of the most common struggles and pitfalls that camp directors face when delivering pre-camp orientation. Learn best practices and a few easy changes you can make this summer to leave your staff feeling prepared and pumped about their jobs before campers arrive.

A trauma-informed approach to managing camper (and staff) behavior

The emotional and mental health of our campers and staff are finally getting the attention they deserve. Yet as an industry, we have been slow to understand and respond to the impacts of trauma on our campers and staff. Camps need to build programs that emphasize the physical, psychological and emotional safety of those we serve. Unfortunately, few Camps have the resources to implement a trauma-informed system of care.
By making simple changes to the way our staff view and react to camper behaviors, we can gain many benefits from trauma-informed programs. In this workshop, you will learn how implementing a trauma-informed approach to behavior management reduces negative behaviors including bullying and homesickness, and increases camper resiliency while improving camper/camper and camper/staff relationships. Trauma-informed approaches to childcare have repeatedly shown to increase staff engagement, job satisfaction, morale and retention while reducing staff burn-out. Additionally, you will have to make fewer calls to parents."

This workshop will earn attendees hours of time back in their summers simply by teaching them to utilize their newfound productive delegation skills.

From 50% Capacity to Wait List in Three Years – A guide to rebuilding Camp finances and reputation.

Over the last 14 years, Dave Boyle led camp teams to restore the reputation and finances of four distinct programs including two residential treatment programs, a large residential Camp, and a Regional Day Camp. His approach leverages participant data analytics to maximize customer experience leading to higher camper retention, more multiweek campers, and higher word of mouth referrals. Participants will learn how to streamline user experiences to grow your camp and its reputation. Starting with your vision of a perfect program, you will learn to use data to “back-cast" to your current camp model. This repeatable method results in a road map to future growth and wait lists for every session that is easy for both you and your team to follow.
