Welcome and Opening Keynote

10/17/2023 2:30 PM

Welcome to the ACA, Keystone Regional Camp Conference!

Opening Keynote: Tackling Thorny (Camper & Staff!) Behavior with Confidence

Kick off your conference with Emily as we delve into some thorny issues of behavior - both camper and staff! Emily will share strategies and considerations for tackling the tough stuff, and then you'll have a chance to get in on the action! We'll go in-depth into discussion of specific scenarios, seeking answers to questions including "what impacts does this decision have on each part of our camp community?", "what resources do I have/need to manage this?" and "what else do I need to consider when making my next move?" It's part behavior skills, part staff management strategy, and part decision-making practice...the whole session adds up to increased confidence when handling future bumps in the road.

Emily Golinsky’s sessions get called many things, and her favorites are: “tremendously helpful,” “definitely not the same-old-same-old,” “fun and informative” and “not to be missed – a reason to come to the conference!” As Founder of Bright Moose LLC (www.brightmoosetraining.com), Emily provides training, consultation, and professional development for camps, schools and youth organizations, guided by the motto "Help Others Shine Bright!" She has held multiple roles in camp leadership, including most recently 15 years as Executive Director at Camp Starfish (NH). She is Vice President for NH Camps and is an accreditation visitor, committee member, New Camp Director Workshop faculty member, and Newer Director Resource Group facilitator for ACA, New England. Emily has her BS in Health Psychology and MS in Camp Administration & Leadership. In her spare time, she is also an education advocate for youth with special needs, an Adult MHFA instructor, and an avid collector of terribly awesome puns. You’ll find her in Camping Magazine, Parenting NH, ACA’s Project Real Job Blog, and on the Day Camp Pod, as well as at conferences and events around the US. An Employment Law Crash Course for Camps

As camp operators, we serve as the heads of HR for our organizations. Considering that a typical mid-size camp has 100+ employees each summer, this is no simple task. In this session, we will discuss some of the primary employment laws and regulations that govern our relationship with staff. We will also discuss best practices to avoid costly employment disputes. The session concludes with a Q&A so participants have the opportunity to ask questions.

Session led by Issac Mamaysky: Isaac Mamaysky is Partner in Potomac Law Group, where he started a practice team focused on the camp industry. He and his law partners regularly represent day and overnight camps in a wide range of legal matters. In addition to his law practice, Isaac is the founder and executive director of a large ACA-accredited overnight camp in Wayne County, PA. He is also a cofounder and chief legal officer of QuantStreet Capital, a portfolio management firm that offers investing and financial advising services to camps and camp professionals. By working at the intersection of camp, law, and finance, Isaac brings a unique perspective to helping camps with their legal needs.

Cultivating Connections: The Power of Communication in Camp Culture

How do you communicate clearly, concisely and confidently to everyone from a camper to an executive? With the fast paced society we live in, it's hard to have your
message, idea, or opinion stand out unless it is delivered thoughtfully and with a little bit of preparation. In this program, Emmy nominated television news reporter Christina Butler shares best communication practices for all of the important conversations in our lives. Fair warning: you'll learn a lot about communication, and also something about each other during our time together!

Christina Butler is an Emmy nominated television news anchor and reporter who channels that background into teaching people and companies how to best
communicate. Her most requested programs include Presentation Skills, Speaking on The Spot, and Virtual Engagement. She's the most at home with audiences who want to be genuine and more effective in their communication. After two decades on-air and training on Presentation Skills, she's passionate about connection, not perfection. Christina is a contributing author for two books on public speaking, and collects certifications the way some women collect shoes. She currently holds certificates in Emotional Intelligence, Behavioral Styles, and Business Writing.

Moving From Surviving to Thriving at Camp

How often do we hear the phrase "I'm just trying to keep my head above water and survive?" Learning spaces should be a place where we THRIVE! Instead of just
throwing the life preserver into the water and expecting adults to "hang on," we need to GET IN THE WATER and swim alongside them. This session provides a cyclical adult- centered approach to supporting the outcomes for today's youth. Through her work in schools, out of school time programs and camps-Emily Dills has created a
comprehensive coaching model for camp staff to support them every step of the way including pre camp professional development, mid program office hours/check in's and end of program reflection that is individualized for each staff member on specific goals that they set and are supported on by Emily's coaching.

Emily Dills has been attending and working with camps since she was a camper and counselor in training as a kid in Indiana where she attended YMCA Camp Potowatami for many years. She worked at Catalina Island Camps while in college as a counselor and assistant girls camp director. After spending the past 15 years as an educator, instructional coach and leader in K-12 public schools-she now consults with schools, out of school time providers like after school programs and childcare centers as well as camps. She also leads her own day camps with a unique approach on community engagement. Emily believes that an adult centered approach to meeting kids' needs is crucial to organization success. She supports staff in reflecting on their own self awareness and aligning their values to their behavior and mindsets about children with a variety of strategies in supporting the social, emotional and cognitive development of youth.

5 Rules of Effective Conversation| From Curiosity to Questions to Customers

Communication is not optional, yet we do not always give conversation the consideration it deserves to win the hearts and attention of family, friends, and potential customers/clients. The International Conversation Coach for Kids and Adults, Jackie Bailey, has witnessed dynamic shifts in family relationships, friendships, and even business success when five particular rules of effective conversation are applied. These tools are beneficial to adults, teens, and kids because they are simple and practical. Because of Jackie’s engaging style, you’ll not only learn the Five Rules of Effective Conversation, but you’ll also be putting them to use before her presentation concludes. You’ll leave her session a more effective conversationalist.

Jackie Bailey: “Don’t tell anyone” silenced Jackie Bailey at the age of 8. Fifteen years later she saved another child by speaking up. Known as The International Conversation Coach, Jackie inspires clients to break their silence and become victorious over trauma. Today she is the founder and executive director of The Speak Feed Lead Project which has empowered hundreds of children, teens, and adults with confident, courageous voices shared on global stages, competitions, podcasts, and books. Jackie is a 2015 semi-finalist in The World Championship of Public Speaking putting her in the top 98 of 33,000 competitors. She’s a best-selling author of four books on topics ranging from leadership, healing, communication, and parenting. She is co-host of Life Mastery Radio with Todd & Jackie, and an award-winning team-builder, educator, leader, and coach. In Your Post-Virus Workplace: Crisis Communications: Always Acknowledged, Never Planned or Trained

COVID 19 taught us that all the crisis plans your workplace is supposed to have require crisis communications with internal and external audiences. Yet most employers have not planned, trained, drilled or exercised these important procedures and systems—and the people who run them—ever or on a regular basis for emergency, disaster recovery, business continuity, pandemic or crisis media plans. As COVID 19 and Sandy Hook proved, your management can do this right and protect the brand; or do this wrong and all get fired. Crisis communications cut across all your plans. This presentation employs case histories that will focus on the tactical and strategic communications that are required by law; mandated by standards and best practices; as well those that can save your job when an emergency strikes.

Bo Mitchell was Police Commissioner of Wilton, CT for 16 years. He retired to found 911 Consulting which creates emergency, disaster recovery, business continuity, crisis communications and pandemic plans, plus training and exercises for organizations like GE HQ, Hyatt HQ, H&R Block HQ, MasterCard HQ, four colleges and universities plus 25 secondary schools. He serves clients headquartered from Boston to LA working in their facilities from London to San Francisco. Bo has earned 22 certifications in homeland security, emergency management, disaster recovery, business continuity, safety and security. He also serves as an expert in landmark court cases nationally.

Please Sign Here: The Contracts that Bind Us

This is a highly-engaging session about the contracts that govern our relationships with parents, vendors, retreat groups, and staff. What key provisions should these
agreements contain? What are the main considerations when evaluating the strength of our contracts? What are the downsides of reusing contracts that we "borrow" from other camps? Drawing on the speaker’s extensive experience drafting a wide range of contracts for camps, this session will explore best practices for the many agreements camps use to define their commercial relationships.

Understanding and Supporting Neurodiversity at Camp

Neurodiversity is NOT just another word for autism! It's a recognition and celebration of the unique way different brains work. Rather than problems to be fixed, learning disabilities, autism, and other intellectual or cognitive challenges are valuable human variations that allow for individuality to thrive. That said, many neurodiversities do lead to specific traits that others can find confusing or hard to handle, such as communication differences, sensory defensiveness, and a tendency to misinterpret social situations. This session will introduce you to the various neurodiversities you can expect to find among your camper and staff populations. It will also prepare you for when challenging situations manifest themselves at camp. You'll walk away more confident in your efforts towards inclusion, with concrete, applicable strategies for proactive behavior management, relationship building, and increased emotional well-being.

Developing the Climate Resilient Child: The Role of Camps

Are you interested in learning how to engage positively and proactively with campers about climate change? With the increase in eco-anxiety among youth, it can be challenging to talk about. The good news is that camp is an ideal setting to help lessen the effects of eco-anxiety and empower children to be climate resilient. Just as humanitarian organizations pre-position resources before a crisis, the premise of this
session is that we can prepare our youth now for the climate uncertainty ahead, and by supporting development of their climate resilience we are giving them a sense of hope, agency, and self-reliance.The purpose of this session is to create a dialogue among camp leaders, staff, and volunteers around the role camps can play in developing climate resilience in campers. Participants will be introduced to the Climate Resilience competency – the capacity of children to persist, adapt, and transform in the face of climate shocks and stresses – and explore creative programming ideas to engage campers in the climate competency development process. Join us to learn about practical steps you and your camp can take to empower youth to be climate leaders instead of climate victims.

Sidney Rainey is a leadership and organization development consultant with over 30 years of experience helping organizations to thrive. His core strengths include facilitation, executive coaching, strategic planning, leadership development, and 360- degree feedback. In addition to working with camps, Sidney has served a variety of nonprofit, corporate, and international development clients including USAID’s Bureau
for Humanitarian Assistance, Environmental Protection Agency, US Forest Service, and the Population Reference Bureau. He also conducted strategic planning under the auspices of Ethiopia’s Climate Resilient Green Economy Initiative resulting in a national 5-year climate action plan and the creation of the Ethiopian Climate Finance Network. Sidney believes strongly that climate action is not about saving the planet, but about saving all human communities around the world with equal urgency.

Covered topics include: stereotypes, prejudice, & discrimination; definitions of DEIB, microaggressions, sexual orientation and gender, and cultural considerations (including international staff at US camps). There's no story telling, trigger-warning-worthy content, or sharing of experiences in this session; rather, it is designed to help you identify the things you think your staff know and don't know, and give you a roadmap for bringing your entire team to a shared level of knowledge as a basis for successful interactions.

Program Elevation (and Aligning to Core Values)

What do your campers do when they aren't shooting at the archery range? Do you have trouble getting campers into the water? Are your all-camp games stale? Does your camp program align with your values? Let’s look at vignettes of what other camps are doing to see how they've transformed their grounds with inspirational settings. And the best part is that these are all no-cost or low-cost ideas. We'll look at the "What's next?" framework and practice applying it to your existing camp programs. We'd like to have participants understand the importance of articulating their camp programs (not just games, but all program areas) to their values - and provide a toolset to do that. We will provide some examples of how some camps have elevated their program and challenge participants to share their successes (or their aspirations).

Dave Ghidiu has been involved with resident camping since 1994. He grew up working atYMCA Camp Cory in the heart of the Finger Lakes region in upstate New York. After twenty years of seasonal and full-time jobs at camps, Dave pivoted to higher education. Currently he is a professor of computer science and director for the Center for Teaching and Learning at a college in upstate New York (though he still is actively involved in camping as a contributor and consultant). Dave has presented at local, regional, state, national, and international conferences. Most of his speaking engagements have been at academic conferences, though he has presented at ACA New England, ACA Tri-State, and ACA National.

Aaron Proietti is the author of the book Today’s Innovator, and founder of a coaching and training company of the same name. He is an innovation expert with 20+ years of experience innovating in complex organizations. Aaron has spoken at many conferences on topics related to program design, organizational values, innovation leadership, customer-centricity, and more. Through Today’s Innovator’s Shout.Camp program, Aaron and team advises camps on strategy, program design, and more.
