3000 Staff Applicants Season 2023: What Works and Why

Camp Sequoia has had tremendous success in staff recruitment and retention. Last year we got applications from 3,000 staff. We developed systems to help with timely screening, interviewing, onboarding and retention of US based counselors. This session will detail some of these strategies as well as cross camp collaboration for staffing with day and resident programs. These models can be duplicated and allow camp communities to get the staff they need and help others fill their gaps in a collaborative and constructive way.

This session is led by Brian Lux & Reema Dixon.

Brian Lux: Brian is an Eagle Scout, National Camping School Graduate and Certified Master Naturalist who has over two decades of camp leadership experience working with exceptional populations focusing on social and life skills curriculum. Brian holds a Master’s degree in inquiry-based education. He is currently licensed in K-12 Gifted Education and grades 4-8 general education with endorsements in Math, Science, English, and Social Studies. He holds credentials in Mental Health First Aid, Wilderness First Aid and as a 12 year certified Crisis Prevention Instructor building upon a background in advanced life support Emergency Medicine. Brian has presented papers at two World Gifted Conferences, the International Conference on ADHD, and at the Pacific Rim Conference on Disabilities as well as numerous local and regional events. He has also led several sessions relating to best practices on exceptional populations for the American Camping Association Tri-State conference and spoken as an invited guest at the Oxford Forum. He serves as a reviewer for manuscripts submitted to The Teacher Educators’ Journal. His articles on giftedness, frustration tolerance, and the twice exceptional (2e) mind have been seen in a variety of print and online venues including Planet Neurodivergent, Additude Magazine, Attention Magazine and MetroKids et. Al. Brian additionally serves as a long standing CASA (court appointed special advocate for children), advocating for youth in difficult home environments. He serves as President of a volunteer Master Naturalist board and served as the Founding Director of the National Park Educational Institute for Hawaii Volcanoes National Park as well as a Medicaid Waiver Service Supervisor on the Big Island of Hawaii. He currently sits on the IACUC committee for his alma mater and is a field supervisor for pre-service student teachers. Brian enjoys making profound and meaningful differences with exceptional populations, especially in a camp setting. He believes in the transformative experience that Camp Sequoia can provide for all children and especially for children in need of social skill development. In his free time, he enjoys travel and time spent connecting kids with nature domestically and internationally.

Reema Dixon: She received her Gold Award in Girl Scouts for creating programs that encouraged turning artistic hobbies into careers for her local chapter of the Boys and Girls Club. Reema has many friends who struggled with high functioning Autism or ADHD growing up, and she became an advocate for them in school in an effort to help them make connections. Her personal interest in social development led her to take sociology and psychology courses in college focused on a deeper understanding of the non-neurotypical mind. Reema coordinates allergen awareness between our medical team and dining hall staff and holds ServSafe Allergens credentials. Reema has completed training on implementing SEL (social and emotional learning); additionally, Reema is certified in Crisis Prevention and Mental Health First Aid and serves as our office manager during the summer and our year round associate director. Reema has presented at the American Camping Association Conference on keeping campers socially connected outside of camp. Moving from Surviving to Thriving at Camp

How often do we hear the phrase "I'm just trying to keep my head above water and survive?" Learning spaces should be a place where we THRIVE! Instead of just throwing the life preserver into the water and expecting adults to "hang on," we need to GET IN THE WATER and swim alongside them. This session provides a cyclical adult-centered approach to supporting the outcomes for today's youth. Through her work in schools, out of school time programs and camps-Emily Dills has created a comprehensive coaching model for camp staff to support them every step of the way including pre camp professional development, mid program office hours/check in's and end of program reflection that is individualized for each staff member on specific goals that they set and are supported on by Emily's coaching.

This session will be led by Emily Dills- has been attending and working with camps since she was a camper and counselor in training as a kid in Indiana where she attended YMCA Camp Potowatami for many years. She worked at Catalina Island Camps while in college as a counselor and assistant girls camp director. After spending the past 15 years as an educator, instructional coach and leader in K-12 public schools-she now consults with schools, out of school time providers like after school programs and childcare centers as well as camps. She also leads her own day camps with a unique approach on community engagement. Emily believes that an adult centered approach to meeting kids' needs is crucial to organization success. She supports staff in reflecting on their own self awareness and aligning their values to their behavior and mindsets about children with a variety of strategies in supporting the social, emotional and cognitive development of youth.

Nature as Co-Counselor:  Practical Applications of the Science and Practice of Nature Connection for Camper and Staff Well-Being

Camps have a powerful role to play in addressing the current youth mental health crisis, but so many of us feel unsure how to best prepare our staff to meet mental health needs.  Our beautiful camp green spaces, no matter how small or whether they are urban or rural, can help us in vital ways if we understand them as more than a backdrop to camp life. We can become intentional about bringing nature front and center to help build a sense of community belonging, to relieve stress, and to promote camper and staff well-being.  This session provides specific, easily replicated approaches for reimagining your camp green space as a mental health resource. We will explore key concepts, the science behind them, and their practical applications in a broad range of settings. Participants will leave prepared to move towards camp wellness goals in new and creative ways.

Our keynote is Carolyn Schuyler:Carolyn Schuyler is a psychotherapist and the founder and the first Executive Director of Wildrock (www.wildrock.org), a nonprofit Nature Playscape and Discovery Center offering day camps throughout the community to promote mental health through nature play. She currently serves as a Visiting Scholar at the University of Virginia and is the founding Co-Director of an emerging non-profit, Nature Connection Lab, with the mission to promote human and planetary health through nature connection education, innovation, and community collaboration.  She is passionate about cultivating communities of care through shared experience in nature to promote mental health and a conservation ethic.

Classroom Management at Camp?! Behavior management strategies that work, inspired by the classroom

We know teachers can hold it down. Teachers regularly wrangle students who struggle to focus, don’t always want to be there, and have individualized needs. While we don’t often see this at camp, we can learn from them. In this session participants will receive a version of Camp Behavior Management 101 that has been used for years at Camp Timberlake. This session teaches behavior management strategies and routines that work in the classroom and are adapted for camp. Best part – campers still will love camp. The session is a mix of strategies that have been used in public and charter schools and is great for current summer staff, those who train summer staff, or those who manage camper behavioral health.

This session is led by Jarod "W" Wunneburger: W is the Director of Timberlake (TL), a camp with the Farm and Wilderness Foundation in Plymouth, VT. He’s been with TL since 2007 and is TL’s first BIPOC mixed-race director. He previously worked for the Trevor Project (LGBTQ+ suicide prevention & crisis intervention), taught special education and middle school math, and was a school administrator in the Bronx and Manhattan. He has a MA in School Leadership from Harvard and a MA in Special Education from St Johns. He's passionate about using the best teacher tools to coach staff and support campers. He sits on the board of an independent school in Vermont and currently training a Samoyed named Atlas to become a therapy dog.

Stepping through the Looking Glass With STEM: A Widening Perspective

SSAI's Office of STEM Engagement takes you on an adventure through the looking glass by examining the different perspectives of STEM developed with campers in mind. From views taken by NASA satellites above to an up close and personal view of the soil beneath our feet, through the basic elements of engineering below to the exploration of rockets beyond, participants will learn multiple strategies for bringing STEM alive for their campers. Participants will engage in activities designed to add new perspective to how we look at our world through the looking glass with STEM. A packet of free resources for getting started with an engineering design challenge will be provided to each participant.

This session is led by Tina Harte-Ballinger

Tina Harte-Ballinger joined the Science System and Application Earth Science Education team in 2012 as a contractor for NASA. She is currently SSAI's Director of STEM Engagement. In 2018, she began the NASA GLOBE Goes to Camp Pilot which transitioned to project status during summer of 2023. She is a GLOBE Trainer, SciGirls Trainer, and STEM Mentor for both formal and informal educators across the United States.
