Parents today are perhaps the most conscientious, devoted and anxious in American history. In the last twenty years college-educated mothers have doubled the amount of time they spend with their children; so have fathers (though the absolute number of hours per week is much lower than mothers). They are helping their children with homework, coaching their children’s teams, arranging play-dates and carpooling everywhere. These deeply invested parents are sometimes having a harder time letting go of their children and trusting in camps. When they send their children to residential camps they need to see website photos every day; they need children to receive their emails immediately; they require more frequent reports and they often imagine they can manage their children’s homesickness at a distance. In this webinar, Dr. Thompson will discuss parent anxiety and the very different forms it takes from the aggressive-threatening parent to the wildly anxious and un-reassurable parent. He will offer ways to talk to parents about their hopes and fears for camps.

LEARNER OUTCOMES:
By the end of the webinar participant will:

  1. Understand this social phenomena
  2. Handle challenging interactions with overly-involved parents
  3. Set limits and boundaries for over-intrusive parents
